Presa Canario Breed Description
For those of you not familiar with the Presa Canario (otherwise known as the Canary Dog) and looking to buy one of our wonderful Presa Canario puppies, here is the Presa Canario breed description.
Presa Canario History
The Presa Canario dog was historically a guardian and cattle herding dog. The Presa Canario originated on the Canary Islands which are Spanish islands that reside 100 miles northwest of Africa. Presa Canario dogs were derived from the Iberian Presa (Perro de Ganado Majorero) which was a mastiff type of average size. It’s attributes are rustic, intelligence with intuition, and a fearless guardian. Various other breeds contributed to the Presa Canario origins, especially the Presa Espanol in its large varieties and the bulldog varieties (Alano). In time English colonists, traders, and merchants brought the Bandogges and Tiedogs (ancestors of the Bulldogs and Mastiffs) to the Canary Islands. Afterwords the English introduced their gladiator breeds (Bulldogs and Bull/Terriers) and began crossbreeding with the then existent “Perro de Presa” of the Canary Archipelago. From then on the Presa Canario dog was born containing a myriad of it’s ancestors characteristics and personality.
The even-tempered, intelligent and athletic Presa Canario has a short, smooth, coarse coat in fawn or brindle with a darker face mask. The Presa is quiet in the home, loyal to its family, wary of strangers and protective of its property. Like many guardian breeds, the Presa requires early training and plenty of socialization. Presa Canario Dog Appearance
The Presa Canario, especially the ones bred by us at Montreal Presa are a very large, powerfully constructed dog. The head is MASSIVE! The body of the Presa Canario is built strong like Hercules and is slightly longer than its height with a broad deep chest, although females may be slightly longer in body and possess somewhat less rib space than the males.
The fur is textured with a flat coat. On that note, the Presa Canario sheds only minimally so your Presa Canario dog will only need brushing with a firm bristle brush on a regular basis. To keep your Presa Canario’s coat with a nice healthy shine wipe the coat down with a soft piece of toweling.

The Presa Canario is an awesome family pet and even great around young kids. The Presa Canario has as your pet will be very responsive and very loving while protective. Presa Canario dogs are tough breeds but can be prone to hip dysplasia in it’s old age. Presa Canarios can live to be up to 12 years old!
